BUNN Sold: The Quiet Transfer of a Springfield Legacy to a Global Giant

Nearly two centuries after its roots began in Illinois, one of the most recognizable names in beverage equipment has changed hands—raising questions about the future of a company that helped shape how the world drinks coffee.

Before dawn each morning across America, coffee begins brewing in diners, hospitals, convenience stores, and office breakrooms.

In thousands of those kitchens, the machines quietly doing the work carry a small red badge stamped with a name most customers never notice: BUNN.

For decades, the Springfield, Illinois–based manufacturer has helped define the mechanics of modern coffee service. Its brewers have poured countless cups around the world, powering the daily rituals of commuters, travelers, nurses, and restaurant patrons.

Now, the company behind those machines has entered a new chapter.

On March 12, 2026, global foodservice equipment manufacturer Ali Group announced it had completed the acquisition of Bunn Commercial LP (BUNN®), formerly known as Bunn-O-Matic Corporation.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The announcement places one of central Illinois’ most recognizable manufacturers inside a multinational corporation that operates across dozens of countries and oversees more than a hundred equipment brands.

For the global coffee industry, the acquisition signals another step in the consolidation of a rapidly evolving market.

For Springfield, it marks a turning point in the story of a company that has been part of the region’s industrial identity for generations.

“The acquisition of BUNN marks an important step in strengthening Ali Group’s leadership in the global coffee and beverage equipment sector and advancing our long-term growth strategy,” said Filippo Berti, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ali Group.

“BUNN brings a strong heritage, a culture of innovation and a highly complementary portfolio that expands our global capabilities. Together, we are well positioned to deliver even greater value to our customers and accelerate growth across key markets.”

The deal brings BUNN into Ali Group’s global portfolio of more than 115 foodservice equipment brands. In North America, the company will operate as part of the Welbilt portfolio, another major name in commercial kitchen equipment.

Yet even as the announcement reshapes the corporate structure of the company, much about the transition remains uncertain.

As of the close of business yesterday, BUNN employees had not been formally notified of the sale, according to individuals familiar with the situation.

There has also been no public indication whether existing employees will remain in their roles or whether Ali Group plans to integrate leadership or operational teams from within its global organization.

Equally notable: BUNN itself has not issued any public statement regarding the transaction.

For employees and industry observers alike, the absence of immediate communication has left questions about what the acquisition could mean for the workforce and the company’s long-standing headquarters in Springfield.

Corporate transitions of this scale often unfold gradually, with integration plans, leadership decisions, and operational strategies taking weeks or months to finalize.

For now, the machines that carry the BUNN name will continue to brew coffee around the world—while the future of the company behind them begins to take shape under new ownership.

The roots of that company stretch back nearly two centuries.

Founded in 1840, the enterprise that would eventually become BUNN grew through five generations of family entrepreneurship, evolving from a small Midwestern business into one of the most recognized manufacturers of commercial beverage equipment in the world.

The company’s modern identity began to take shape in 1957, when it entered the beverage equipment business.

By 1963, Bunn-O-Matic Corporation was formally incorporated, launching a period of expansion that would make its brewers a standard fixture in restaurants, cafés, hospitals, and convenience stores.

Over the decades, the company developed a comprehensive portfolio of beverage technology including:

  • Commercial coffee brewers

  • Iced tea systems

  • Superautomatic espresso machines

  • Grinding systems

  • Beverage dispensers

  • Water filtration and beverage systems

Guided by its brand promise, “A Partner You Can Count On™,” BUNN built a reputation for reliability and engineering precision—qualities that made its machines a trusted tool for foodservice operators around the world.

Though its equipment spread globally, the company maintained its headquarters in Springfield, Illinois, while expanding operations across the United States and establishing additional facilities and offices in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, China, and the United Kingdom.

For Springfield, the company has long represented something larger than its product line.

It has been a symbol of a type of American manufacturing success story that has grown increasingly rare: a company built over generations, expanding globally while remaining rooted in the community where it began.

The acquisition now places that legacy inside a corporation of dramatically larger scale.

Founded in 1963, Ali Group has grown into one of the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial and institutional foodservice equipment. The company employs approximately 17,000 people and operates across more than 30 countries, with 80 manufacturing facilities in 16 countries.

Its equipment is used by major restaurant and hotel chains, hospitals, schools, airports, correctional institutions, and institutional kitchens around the world.

By acquiring BUNN, the company strengthens its position in the rapidly expanding global beverage equipment sector—an industry driven by rising demand for automated coffee systems, specialty beverages, and integrated foodservice technology.

Industry analysts note that the transaction reflects a broader trend across the foodservice equipment market: consolidation among manufacturers seeking to expand global reach and product portfolios.

Family-owned manufacturers often face increasing pressure to scale production, invest heavily in new technologies, and compete internationally with multinational corporations that operate across multiple equipment categories.

Neither Ali Group nor BUNN has publicly discussed the circumstances that led to the sale.

For now, the acquisition leaves several key questions unanswered.

Whether BUNN’s Springfield headquarters will remain the company’s operational center has not been addressed.

There has been no public indication regarding potential changes to manufacturing operations, leadership structure, or workforce plans.

It also remains unclear whether BUNN will continue to operate as a largely independent brand within the Ali Group portfolio or be integrated more fully into the multinational company’s broader operations.

For employees, customers, and the Springfield community, those answers may take time to emerge.

What is clear is that the company built over generations in central Illinois now enters a new phase within one of the largest foodservice equipment manufacturers in the world.

For nearly seventy years, BUNN machines have quietly brewed coffee in restaurants, cafés, and workplaces across the globe.

Few people who poured a cup ever thought about the engineering behind it—or the Illinois company responsible for making it possible.

Now the future of that company is being written inside a global enterprise.

The machines will keep brewing.

But the story behind the name on them has just changed.
